A "soapbox racer" is a homemade car, a one-of-a-kind
creation, usually built out of spare parts, that when completed
is taken to the top of a hill and sent careening downwards, in
the hope that it arrives at the bottom ahead of all the others.
It might not be pretty but it gets the job done and, at the end
of the day, it's an honest little machine. That's pretty much
what our company is about: innovation, ingenuity and
integrity...
Soapbox
Racer is Sheri Jones and Mike Campbell and the company is
located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
Sheri
Jones is a well-known
music industry stalwart. She currently works with a number of
Canada's most well-respected artists through her own company
(Sheri Jones Entertainment Consulting) and sits on the boards of
FACTOR (The Foundation To Assist Canadian Talent On Record),
CARAS (the Canadian Association of Recording Arts and Sciences)
and the ECMA (the East Coast Music Association) an organization
she helped found. Sheri brings a wealth of music business
experience to the team at Soapbox Racer Entertainment.
Mike
Campbell has spent over
25 years in the music business in Canada. He's worked in retail
and at the record company level with experience in independent
promotion and, most recently, as host of MuchMusic's Going
Coastal and MuchEast shows. His knowledge of the country's
independent music landscape makes him a sought-after consultant.
He's recently worked with Ottawa's National Arts Centre (Atlanic
Scene Festival) and Keith's Brewery (Keith'sFest 2003) as well
as his obligations organizing the rock/alternative stage at the
annual East Coast Music Awards and his role as director on the
Music Industry Association of Nova Scotia board. Mike brings his
undeniable passion to his role in Soapbox Racer Entertainment.
Mike
And Sheri got together to form Soapbox Racer Entertainment with
the specific goal of teaming up to manage Halifax-area rocker, Joel
Plaskett although Joel didn't know it at the time!
Luckily, Joel liked the idea. Soapbox Racer will expand its
operations in the future to consider other acts that inspire
them and need their able assistance crossing that finish line at
the bottom of that awfully big hill...
Soapbox
Racer Entertainment is also available as a consulting service
for the industry.

Truthfully
Truthfully is Joel Plaskett's first album for MapleMusic
Recordings and we plan to put an exclamation point on what
anyone with an ear already knows - Plaskett is a STAR! This new
offering (produced by Joel and fellow ex Thrush Hermit, Ian
Mcgettigan, at Halifax's Sonic Temple Studio) is a rock fan's
dream and will capture the imagination of anyone with a healthy
respect for the music that's been at the forefront of global
popular culture for the better part of the last 50 years.
Plaskett
and his excellent band, The Emergency (Tim Brennan on Bass and
Dave Marsh on drums) manage to distill their encyclopedic
influences - influences as disparate as Led Zeppelin, Steve
Mariott-era Small Faces, Curtis Mayfield and Vic Chestnutt -
into heart-felt, intelligent, original music that'll remind you
why you got hooked on the stuff in the first place.
From
riff-happy rockers like "The Red Light",
"Extraordinary" and "Lights Down Low" to the
aching ballads "Until You Came Along" and "The
Day You Walked Away", Plaskett shows all the signs of a
major songwriting talent coming into his own - something
long-time fans have seen coming from the get-go.
For
those of you coming to this artist later in the game, Joel
Plaskett has been playing in bands and making records longer
than most of his peers have been shaving. Ten years with
Halifax's Thrush Hermit gave Joel ample opportunity to hone his
chops and tour extensively in North America while still young
enough to enjoy the simple thrill of it. The Hermit's swan song,
Clayton Park, was the most played CD on Canadian campus radio in
1999 and videos "From The Back of the Film" and
"The Day We Hit the Coast" from that disc both got
serious attention at MuchMusic.
Joel's
first solo effort, In Need of Medical Attention, drew critical
acclaim on several continents and the follow-up, Down at the
Khyber (again produced by Joel and McGettigan) made virtually
every critic's top ten list, spawned three videos - "Maybe
We Should Just Go Home", "Clueless Wonder" and
"True Patriot Love" - and also garnered Joel several
ECMA nominations on his home turf as well as a Juno nomination
for Best New Artist.
If
you've got a heart and if you've got a stake in the future of
rock'n'roll, then you'll recognize that Joel Plaskett is the
real deal. He's already proven he's no flash in the pan, now
he's proving that he's the newest Canadian star for the ages.
